About Twenty (20) Group

What can a Twenty Group do for you?

Strategic Alliance Group, Inc. Twenty (20) Groups are modeled after the industry standard of the "Twenty (20) Group: concept. Each group consists of 20 non-competing businesses within a specific industry and meets three times per year to discuss their particular business and exchange relevant ideas with other members. The goal is to develop business best practices and the process allows members to learn practical operating practices that work and ones that fail. Meetings are normally held near a member business; however, the ultimate meeting locations are selected and voted on by each group.

Strategic Alliance Group, Inc. Twenty (20) Groups Program format is problem solving solutions that are pointed to all areas of direction that influence dealership success:

SAG Creation by Strategic Alliance Group

Each month, Group members submit their financial information to Strategic Alliance Group via our secure and confidential server. WE then prepare the consolidated financial "Performance Reports" that include comparative metrics on the group's financial data. Performance reports are prepared each month and are posted on the Group Portal that each member is connected and available to view or download for printing.

Strategic Alliance Group, Inc. History & Development

Our story begins in the late 1980s, when a new program emerged to help independent tire dealers prosper. The program, called "A Practical Approach to Improving Tire Dealer Profits," was the combined effort of the National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association (NTDRA) Field Services Committee, Dr. Robert Cox-Dean Emeritus of the University of South Florida (USF), the research team from USF's College of Business Administration Center, and seven of the Rubber Manufactures during this time.

I was fortunate to attend one of Dr. Cox’s Seminars at the University of Chicago in 1989. I was extremely impressed with the two day seminar that was also attended by Les Schwab, Phil Friedlander, and several others of today’s tire industry icons.

Finding a New Program

In 2004 during a summer business meeting, the Board of Directors for the Tire Industry Association (TIA) challenged me to find a program to help the “Owners and Managers” of the Industry.

After two years, I had interviewed 10+ companies that provided business improvement services to a variety of business, manufacturing, and group associations.

These included:

  • Accounting firms, both small and large
    • Specializing in cost control
    • Financial comparing to industry standards
    • Crises Analysis
  • Profit Analysis Firms with similar services
  • Benchmarking Firms that basically established benchmarks to compare to
  • Financial Profiling with Training Program follow up

None of these companies had any real experience in the Tire Industry, however, and most of the companies were financially focused.

The 20 Group Solution

My pursuit continued until I noticed my best friend making a lot of changes and successfully growing his business. I finally pulled him aside and asked the question: What are you doing different? His reply: “Twenty Group.”

With continued discussions, I realized the operational concept, benefits, and economy of participating in a group of like-minded business professionals. The educational value and opportunity for practical application was the answer.

In 2007 after starting the first successful 20 Group that was focused on Retail operations, there continued to be requests to add Groups to address other segments of the Industry.

In August 2011 the Strategic Alliance Group, Inc. was developed to address the needs of the Commercial Segment of the Tire Industry and still SAG continues to maintain a strong presence in the Retail and Automotive Service as well.
